Описание
In April 2026, Laura Claycomb emailed to ask if I would compose a song in honor of her beloved voice teacher Barbara Hill Moore. The song would be premiered as a surprise gift during the presentation of Barbara’s Lifetime Achievement Award from NATS on July 6, 2026 at the Convention in San Antonio, TX.

I adore both Laura and Barbara, so I wanted to write this as a gift.
Barbara’s extraordinary career and her beautiful and generous spirit have touched everyone. Together, Laura and I searched for the perfect poem, finding it with Lucille Clifton’s won’t you celebrate with me. For me, these lines stood out:

“I had no model./born in Babylon/both nonwhite and woman/what did I see to be except myself?/I made it up/here on this bridge between/starshine and clay.”

I composed the work in a burst of creativity between May 16-23, 2026. The song opens with a sweet melody. The changing harmonic landscapes follows the emotional subtext, and leads to the dramatic climax, exaggerated by repetitions and a climb to the voice’s stratosphere (so perfect for Laura). After a solo reiteration of the opening words, the piano replays the opening motif to quietly end the song.
