Description
This poem by my friend Dana Gioia beautifully illustrates the many unspoken bonds that develop in a “marriage of many years”. The opening music that accompanies “Most of what happens happens beyond words” becomes a leitmotif, and thus the music itself, divorced from the words, becomes emblematic of their meaning. The slower, dreamier sections underscoring “You are a language I have learned by heart” also repeats, for emphasis.
I set this poem as a 65th birthday gift for my husband, Bruce Rosenblum, to whom I have been married since 1976. I rehearsed in secret with Maureen McKay and surprised my husband with the premiere on a recital of my music at PianoCraft in Gaithersburg, MD on October 10, 2018.
You can hear the premiere recording with Maureen McKay and Lori Laitman on Spotify on the "Are Women People — Songs of Lori Laitman" CD
